You Will Take Some Of Your Best Photos Here
Habits can be difficult to change. However, one habit I’m glad I managed to shift is putting my camera away on travel days. Whether it’s an 11-hour flight or a 30-minute bus ride, I used to pack all my gear away until I reached the destination. While this approach was more practical, it also led to many missed opportunities. Too often, I’d be in an airport and see a great photo, only to realise it would take ages to get my camera. This either meant missing the shot or being lazy and just moving on.
For a while, I tried using my iPhone as a travel pocket camera. But I just don’t enjoy shooting with an iPhone. Even though photo quality has improved over the years, it still feels like a phone shot, which I personally don’t like.
These days, I either keep my main camera (Sony A7R) on a shoulder strap with me at all times, or carry a smaller system like a Ricoh or Fuji X100 tucked into my sling bag for easy access. Since sticking to this “camera out all the time” rule, I’ve noticed a big increase in the number of photos I take on travel days. What’s more, these photos actually add to the overall album from the trip, as they show the beginning or end of the journey.
I suggest finding a way to always have a camera on you. It’s one of the easiest ways to make sure you get more shots. Who knows, some of those might end up being among your favourites.
