Viltrox AF 26mm F2.8 EVO First Impressions
In this blog, we’ll be taking a look at the new Viltrox 26mm EVO lens for Sony. For full transparency, Viltrox sent me this unit before its release, and I get to keep it afterwards. That said, this first-impressions post reflects 100% my own opinions. Viltrox does not get a preview of, or any input into, the final published article.
Purpose
This lens has a clear purpose: to be the smallest and lightest wide-angle solution for Sony’s full-frame system. At 26mm, it offers a wide field of view that’s ideal for street photography, travel, and documenting everyday life. If you have a higher-resolution camera such as one of the A7R models, switching to APS-C mode will give you a field of view equivalent to around 40mm, making this a versatile everyday lens. The design is clearly aimed at people who prioritise portability. From my understanding, it’s one of the smallest options available while still retaining the essential functionality you’d expect. For me, this lens would make a great travel backup as well as an everyday carry, and all for $300.
Build and Handling
The lens has a solid metal construction that feels sturdy and high-quality. The aperture ring has a nice level of damping and satisfying clicks, although the focus ring feels a little too stiff for me. I’ve often complained about the cheap-feeling lens hoods and caps included with Viltrox lenses, and I’m glad to say that isn’t the case here. The lens cap is solid and magnetic, and it finally matches the build quality of the lens itself.
When it comes to handling, as you might expect, you barely feel this lens on the camera. It’s ideally suited to the smaller A7C bodies. While it also works perfectly well with a larger A7R-style body, the combination does look a little comical. Despite the lens’s small size, the aperture ring is easy to use, and I had no issues making fast, precise adjustments. The same can’t be said for the focus ring, which, as mentioned, feels a little tight. That doesn’t prevent it from doing its job, but this wouldn’t be the lens I’d choose for a tactile manual-focusing experience.
Features
Given its small size, you might assume this lens wouldn’t have many features. However, I’m happy to say that it includes the most important one: an aperture ring. On a lens this compact, I wouldn’t have blamed Viltrox for excluding it. The fact that it’s present, and genuinely useful, is great. You also get a rubber gasket around the mount, along with a USB connection for firmware updates. All in all, this little lens has everything you need. I feel Viltrox has made the most of the limited space available. I also like the magnetic lens cap and hood. It’s a clever way of implementing it.
Image Quality
Overall, the image quality is fine. Of course, this lens will never compete with one that’s five times its size, but for what it is, it performs well. I don’t think anyone buying this lens will expect perfect corner-to-corner sharpness. If you’re a pixel peeper, perhaps you need to spend more than $300 on a lens to satisfy your addiction. However, if you don’t plan on examining 200% crops of your photos, the image quality is perfectly acceptable. Centre sharpness is actually good; it’s primarily the corners where things soften up.
Autofocus Performance
This is where I noticed a clear reduction in performance. I used the lens on my Sony A1 II, and despite that camera having some of the best autofocus in the game, it took at least twice as long to acquire focus. Focusing feels more like someone performing a fast focus pull than the lens immediately snapping onto the subject, as we’re used to with Sony lenses. If you plan on shooting fast action, I don’t think you’ll have a great time with it. However, if you need a lens for slower-paced travel, still-life photography, family photos, or documenting your day, the autofocus system is perfectly adequate.
Summary
All in all, I think this is a great lens at an amazingly good price. While you give up some image quality and autofocus performance, you gain an incredibly compact and affordable package. The only other lens I can compare it with is the Sony 24mm f/2.8 G. While that lens has noticeably better autofocus and a slight image quality improvement, it’s also twice the size and more than twice the price. Overall, I can recommend the Viltrox 26mm EVO to anyone who needs a tiny pancake lens for everyday carry or as a backup. I probably wouldn’t use it as the main lens for my work, but as a backup for backpacking-style trips, I think it’s perfect.
Instead of telling you how these will change your life, I would rather be practical and answer the most common questions that people tend to have when buying presets.

They are editing settings that are saved in a file and can be applied to any image.

Sometimes because they like the work of the photographer and want that style for their own photos. Mostly because they would like to see how other people edit and learn by reverse engineering the presets. Other times it’s just to support their favourite photographers, thank you!

Do I actually use these?
Yes. This is the same pack I use right now for all my editing. This isn’t a pack made just to sell.
Do these presets get updated?
Yes, as my style changes, these presets will also be updated. Any time a new update is available, you will get a free update via email. Of course you also keep all the old presets in case you prefer the older looks. Only presets purchased from 2025 onwards will receive the updates.
What file types are these presets for?
- All RAW files
- JPEGs & TIFFs (not recommended)
What camera brands are these presets for?
These were designed around Fujifilm, Sony, and Leica sensors. With that said, they will work with all camera brands. While there might be differences due to individual camera colour science, the overall feel of the preset will carry over.
Will these work with JPEG files?
Yes, but you will need to reduce the intensity and make further edits. I strongly recommend editing RAW files.
Are these one click edits?
95% No. You would need to do some basic adjustments as each image is different. These adjustments can include exposure, colour balance etc. In 5% of cases you can just apply and leave it alone.
Do I need to know how to edit?
You need to have a basic understanding of adjusting exposure, highlights, shadows, etc. A more comprehensive editing skillset will let you get the most out of them.
How many presets are included?
10 in the main pack and 24 in the extras pack
Why two packs?
The main pack is what I use for 99% of my edits and is kept small to reduce wasted time scrolling through presets. The extras pack is everything I don’t use often.
What software do I need?
These presets will work with any of the following:
- Photoshop (adobe camera raw)
- Lightroom Classic

Will these presets work with free versions of the above software?
You need to research and double check before buying. These presets were designed for the full paid versions.
Will these presets work with very old versions of the above software?
