The Golden Years

A few weeks ago, while doomscrolling YouTube, I stumbled upon a video from a music festival dating back to around 2010-ish. The video was showing an Avicii performance, with all the songs that take me straight back to my late teens.

As I was watching it, I began thinking about those days and how good they were. They really did feel like the golden years.

The funny thing is, I was actually at that music festival. I didn’t see Avicii because I was watching someone else, but I clearly remember how I felt at the time. I had just finished university, had a ton of student debt, no job, no real prospect of a job, friends were moving away, and the life I once knew was ending right in front of me.

I can tell you for sure that, at that very moment, I wasn’t thinking that one day I would look back on that time with such heavily rose-tinted glasses.

Fast forward to 2017. I picked up photography seriously and was trying to shoot as much as I could. I also had a day job, which thankfully was fully remote.

That period of my life was equally tough. I had gone through a breakup and watched a business I built crumble into a pile of debt. I remember sneaking out between meetings to go and shoot, taking phone calls in quiet London side streets, and making up excuses for my absence. I was stressed, overweight, unhappy, and certainly didn’t think of that period as the golden years.

Today, I look back on that time and smile. I laugh at the good and the bad because, from where I’m standing now, those were the golden years too.

What I’ve learned is that right now might be the golden years you look back on in the future.

Whatever you’re going through, good or bad, there’s a good chance that one day you’ll look back on this period of your life and smile. Maybe you’ll remember the people who were around, the places you went, the stupid things you did, the problems that felt enormous at the time, or simply who you were before life moved on again. I already knew the importance of being present and really enjoying every moment, but that random Tuesday evening made me realise something slightly different.

I am living my golden years right now. So why wait until they’re over to appreciate them?
