Favourite Sony Lenses After 1 Year

In this blog I will share my favourite Sony lenses after 1 year with the system. My definition of favourite is simple:

  • Enjoyment when shooting

  • Least resistance, friction, or technical issues

  • Makes me feel inspired

  • Gets results

  • Makes me want to pick it up

As always, this is based on my experience and you might not share the same opinions. Lastly, this blog is not affiliated with Sony in any way. All the lenses listed were purchased by me with my own money.

Sony 24-50mm f2.8 G

This is a zoom disguised as a prime, and it’s totally unique. Unlike most zooms that start on the wider end and zoom in, this one starts at 50mm, and as the barrel is extended, it zooms out. I treat it as a 50mm prime that can be turned into a wider zoom, and it’s by far my favourite and most used lens in the Sony system. I mostly use it for street and everyday photography. You can read the full blog about it here.

Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GM II

If I could only travel with one lens, it would be this one. While it’s bigger and heavier than the previous zoom mentioned, it covers a longer focal range and is noticeably sharper. While I’m not a pixel peeper, having extra sharpness helps maintain image quality when cropping. This lens is feature packed, built like a tank, and is a dependable piece of kit that travels with me everywhere. You can read the full blog about it here.

Sony 40mm f2.5 G

The daily carry king (assuming you like 40mm). I have this almost permanently attached to the A7CR and use it as a daily carry. The lens is so small and light that you barely notice it on your shoulder. This comes with me on every single trip, and on days out where I don’t want to focus too much on photography. You can read the full blog about it here.

Sony 35mm / 50mm f1.4 GM

I’m technically cheating by mentioning two lenses, however given they are identical apart from the focal length, I will group them into one as I never bring them together. This is the low-light king and is my go-to lens for any night photography. In Tokyo, this is the most used piece of glass, and the results speak for themselves. I pick the 35mm if I want to focus on scenes, and the 50mm if I want to go after subjects. You can read the full blog about it here.

Sigma 90mm f2.8 Contemporary

Any time I’m shooting with a wider prime, or with the 24-50mm zoom, I throw this tiny 90mm into my sling just in case. The selling point is the tiny size and low weight, making it practically unnoticeable in any bag. This gives me extra range should I encounter a suitable scene. While I don’t use it on its own as much as the other lenses in this blog, it’s more of an insurance policy in my bag, and has saved my ass a few times already.
