DJI Action Best Accessories
Over the last year, I’ve been using the DJI Action 5 to film many of my YouTube videos. While some have gone down the highly produced cinematic approach, I found a basic action camera setup to be better for my channel. In this blog, I will share some accessories that have helped me get the most out of this little camera. Some I use every single time, while others are used occasionally, however, are incredibly useful. Please keep in mind that my use case is travel, photography, and general videos. I’m not surfing, jumping out of places, or racing in dune buggies across the Sahara. All the items were purchased by me, and I have no vested interest in DJI or any other brand. There are affiliate links in this blog. If you click on the title of each item, you will be taken to it (or similar) on Amazon. It costs nothing more for you; however, I get a tiny % to help keep this blog ad-free.
This is the most essential part of my workflow as this tiny mount opens up 100s of mounting options. You get a normal 3/8 mount as well as a traditional action camera mount. If you only get one accessory, I think it has to be this one.
If you own a DJI Action 5 and plan on doing any talking in your videos, this is a must. As well as outstanding sound quality, you get internal storage to be used as a standalone recorder, the ability to use external mics, 32-bit recording, and seamless integration with the DJI Action 5.
While there are many versions of this concept, I find this one to be the best. This is my second most used accessory due to how useful it is. Firstly, it’s a strong clip, meaning you can mount the camera on your bag, hat, sling, sun visor, or any other item. Secondly, its magnetic bottom means you can mount it to a lamppost for hands-free filming. Lastly, it’s a comfortable grip for handholding the camera.
You need these screws to mount your camera to whatever accessory you have. However, many accessories come with very long screws, which are great for using with thick gloves on your tour ski helmet, but for everyday use, they can be a little ghastly. This is where these metal short screws come in handy. They look better and take less space.
This small device does what it says on the tin. It’s a small magnetic ball joint. You can then unscrew the plate that it comes with and replace it with a tripod, magnetic disc or any other 3/8 compatible accessory. While you can technically use the SmallRig Mount and a traditional ballhead, this setup is noticeably more compact and one I would recommend if you only plan on using a small handheld tripod or magnetic disc.
If you plan on shooting in very bright environments, an ND filter can help make your footage look less jittery. I don’t use this a lot as I frequently go from bright to dark areas; however, if I was shooting in constant bright light, then these would help make my footage look smoother.
For many videos, I am handholding the camera without any accessory or grip. However, I still don’t want to drop it, so I add a small wrist strap for added security. I use the same one for my Ricoh GRIII camera.
This accessory comes with the more expensive pack; however, if you didn’t get that one, then this is the only accessory that I’d say is worth it. This is the least used item on this list because I’m never shooting for extended periods without taking a break to charge the camera. However, if I were shooting in cold weather or extended periods, this case will help make charging so much more efficient.
Instead of telling you how these will change your life, I would rather be practical and answer the most common questions that people tend to have when buying presets.
What are presets?
They are editing settings that are saved in a file and can be applied to any image.
Why do people buy presets?
Sometimes because they like the work of the photographer and want that style for their own photos. Mostly because they would like to see how other people edit and learn by reverse engineering the presets. Other times it’s just to support their favourite photographers, thank you!
What’s the overall style of these presets?
- Filmic
- Minimal
- Soft
- Bright
What are these presets suitable for?
Street & Travel Photography
Some Nature (with further editing)
Some Portraits (with extensive editing)
What do these presets look like?
These presets 100% reflect my current editing style. Please see examples of work below.
Do these presets get updated?
Yes, as my style changes, these presets will also be updated. Any time a new update is available, you will get a free update via email. Of course you also keep all the old presets in case you prefer the older looks. Only presets purchased from 2025 onwards will receive the updates.
What file types are these presets for?
- All RAW files
- JPEGs & TIFFs (not recommended)
What camera brands are these presets for?
These were designed around Fujifilm, Sony, and Leica sensors. With that said, they will work with all camera brands. While there might be subtle colour changes due to individual camera colour science, the overall feel of the preset will carry over.
Will these work with JPEG files?
Yes, but you will need to reduce the intensity and make further edits. I strongly recommend editing RAW files.
Are these one click edits?
95% No. You would need to do some basic adjustments as each image is different. These adjustments can include exposure, colour balance etc. In 5% of cases you can just apply and leave it alone.
Do I need to know how to edit?
You need to have a basic understanding of adjusting exposure, highlights, shadows, etc. A more comprehensive editing skillset will let you get the most out of them.
How many presets are included?
15 in the main pack and 20 in the extras pack
Why two packs?
The main pack is what I use for 99% of my edits. The extras pack is random test presets, one-off looks, and looks I don’t use often.
What software do I need?
These presets will work with any of the following:
- Photoshop (adobe camera raw)
- Lightroom Classic
- Lightroom Desktop
- Lightroom Mobile
Will these presets work with free versions of the above software?
You need to research and double check before buying. These presets were designed for the full paid versions.
Will these presets work with very old versions of the above software?
You need to research and double check before buying. These presets were designed on and for the latest software.
What file type do I get?
XMP
What else do I get?
- Comprehensive PDF guide
- Short video of me editing using these presets
Can I modify these and turn them into my own?
Yes! In fact I encourage you to modify them and play around. Use these to help you get your own style.
