Here you will find a list of the main gear I use. I don’t travel with all this stuff and select what to bring based on the purpose. The gear I take with me on a family holiday is vastly different to a two-month photo trip around Asia. What I would go backpacking with is different to what I’d use for a client shoot.
It has taken me many years to build this business to a point where it can afford to acquire such camera gear. This isn’t a hobby, and all the equipment you see below has made me more money than what I’ve spent on it. The point is that if for you this is a hobby, don’t think you need to get the same gear. Most of my favourite shots were taken on a Fujifilm XT3/XT4/XT5 - all very affordable cameras.
For most items, if you click on the image, it will take you to this product (or similar if no longer available) on Amazon or B&H. These are affiliate links and I get a tiny percentage of any purchase you make. This doesn’t make much, but enough to cover some bills and carry on making videos and writing blogs.
Camera Kit
This is the main kit I use for all my photos and videos, both at home and while on the road. The goal here is to have all bases covered with backup options. Having tried many different combinations of lenses and focal lengths, I found this to be the most useful in almost any situation.
The main body is the Sony A7RV. This is the workhorse and the camera I use for 90% of all photos and videos. The Sony A7CII is a smaller video camera that doubles up as a great backup photo camera. If something were to happen to the A7R, this will do everything I need. In total, I will bring between two and five lenses depending on where I am going.
The first zoom is the Sony 24-50mm f2.8. This lens is compact and starts at 50mm, meaning it stays the most compact when set to the focal length I shoot the most. This lens is used most of the time. The second zoom is a 16-25mm f2.8, which I will use for any wide-angle shots but mostly for video. The final zoom is a 70-200mm f4. This is my telephoto lens that also doubles up as a macro. I don’t shoot telephoto in low light, and I seldom go lower than f4. While this lens is fairly compact for what it is, I only bring it on specific trips where I am certain I will need all that reach.
The Sony 16mm f1.8 is my dedicated video / POV lens. While the 16-25mm is great, this lens is much smaller, lighter, and better in low light. It also provides more separation between the subject and background. It always comes with me if I know I will be doing a lot of video.
The 35mm and 85mm f1.4 GM lenses are for client work and low-light photography. They never travel with me unless it’s for these two purposes.
The Sigma 90mm f2.8 comes with me for situations when I might need extra reach, but don’t want to bring the giant zoom. Perfect for cities due to the small size. It also easily fits into any sling. The Sigma 35mm f2.0 is a great travel backup lens. Should I drop and damage my 24-50mm, this can replace it.
The Minolta 40mm is my fun lens for when I want a more hands on shooting experience and a unique look.
DJI Action 5 is great for ultra light POV and shooting in conditions that might damage the bigger camera. iPhone Pro is great for daily life snapshots.
Camera Accessories
My most used accessories are below. Obviously I have loads of odd bits here and there, but what you see here is used all the time.
Bags / Travel Stuff
Finding the right bag is probably one of the hardest tasks out there. I have spent thousands buying different bags, using them from a month to a year and realising they no longer work for me. Below is what I currently use and what works for me. Of course not all of them come on all the trips and it really depends on the circumstances. Some trips I will only use the small sling and the 26L bag. Other trips I will use the two backpacks. Sometimes a duffel and a backpack work best and other times the larger outdoor bag and a sling is what’s needed. There is no right or wrong, however the selection below covers every scenario.
